The City Council of Alcaine through the Cultural Park of the Martín River, within its Action Plan 2022 with the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of Aragon has carried out an emergency intervention to consolidate in a first phase the turret or tower of the Cristos.
The work consisted of consolidating the crowning, which was terribly affected by the collapse of the roof as a result of its deterioration aggravated by the accumulation of snowfall during the Filomena and Gloria storms, as well as by a lightning strike that affected its structure and, more seriously, one of the corners.
Thus, after the manual dismantling of the upper part of the structure (the Dovecote) due to the serious risk of collapse, it was consolidated and waterproofed by means of perimeter strapping at the crown and the replacement of stone slabs according to the remains of the original structure. Sewing of cracks with locking in the masonry of walls and corners and protection of the wood logs inside, as well as other interior structural seams and water drainage.
Attached are some photos of the process whose photographic monitoring from the mountain of Benicozar was made by José Manuel Bespín.
With this tower, although in a first phase, there are already three consolidated towers in the southwest sector of the town of Alcaina.
